How to Make a Window Peeper Video: 3 Ways (CapCut, Film It, or One Photo)

Three ways to make the window peeper video: film it at a real window, use a CapCut template, or generate the 14-second scene from one photo, compared.

The window peeper video looks simple: a camera creeps up to a lit window at night, the person inside freezes mid-bite, stares straight back and pulls the curtain shut. Getting it to look right is harder than it looks. Here are the three ways to make one, with what each actually takes.

Method 1: Film it yourself

This is the original way, and it is free if you have the right building.

What you need

  • A window you can see from outside at night, ideally from a floor or two below or across a courtyard.
  • A lamp inside so the room glows warm and everything outside stays dark.
  • A burger (or anything you can bite into), a table and a curtain that slides easily.
  • A helper outside with a phone that can zoom smoothly.

How to shoot it

  1. Turn off every other light in the room so the window is the brightest thing on the block.
  2. Your helper starts wide on the building, then zooms in slowly toward your window over about 3 seconds. Keep it as one continuous shot.
  3. Take a bite as the window fills the frame.
  4. Freeze mid-chew. Turn your head and look straight into the lens. Hold it for 5–6 seconds without blinking, if you can.
  5. Stand up, walk to the curtain and pull it shut.
  6. Trim to about 14 seconds and post vertically.

Downsides: you need a helper, a cooperative window and several takes. A shaky zoom or a phone that refocuses mid-shot ruins the effect. And never film anyone who is not in on it.

Method 2: Use a CapCut template

Search CapCut for "window peeper" and you will find user-made templates. They give you timing, transitions and sometimes a zoom effect.

What you need: the CapCut app and your own footage. Templates do not create the night building or the window — you still have to film yourself at a window, or provide a clip that looks like one.

Upsides: free, quick if you already have footage, and the timing is done for you.

Downsides: the result is only as good as the clip you give it. Without a real night window, it will look like an indoor selfie with a zoom. Template branding may also appear. Our CapCut template guide compares this route in more detail.

Method 3: Generate it from one photo

If you do not have the window, the helper or the patience, you can generate the whole scene. On Window Peeper AI:

  1. Upload one photo. One adult, face clearly visible, head and upper body in frame, good light. What you wear in the photo is what you wear in the window. Before you pay, the photo appears inside a lit window so you can see where you will be.
  2. Pick a quality. Standard 480p uses 1 credit and looks great on a phone. HD 720p uses 2 credits and is sharper.
  3. Press Make my video. It takes about 4 minutes. You can close the page — we email you when it is ready.
  4. Download and post. You get a 14-second, 9:16 MP4 with night ambience and the curtain sound, no watermark.

Cost: $9.99 for one video, $24.99 for 3, or $39.99 for 8 ($5.00 per Standard video). Pay once, no subscription, credits never expire. If a video fails, the credits go back to your balance automatically.

Limits, honestly: the scene is fixed — same building, same room, same burger, same curtain. You cannot swap the food or the room yet. Your face is small for the first few seconds while the camera is still outside the building, then sharpens as the window fills the frame.

If you have the window and a friend who can zoom steadily, filming it yourself is free and fun. If you already have footage, a CapCut template is the fastest edit. If you want the whole scene without staging anything — or you want to put a grandma, a boss or a roommate in the window — generating it from one photo is the simplest route.

Tips for any method

  • Commit to the stare. The longer and flatter, the funnier.
  • Keep chewing. It is the detail everyone remembers.
  • Add the trend sound when you post. In TikTok, tap Add sound and pick "original sound - rodentspawn" so your video shows up on the sound's page.
  • Keep it staged. Use yourself or someone who agreed to it. Never film a real neighbour or a stranger through their window.
